Hypothetical scenario: you have a new machine and new installation of Windows XP, but no hardware is recognized. It barely display’s you a really small resolution picture.
Another scenario: you cant look into your box, but you have to get the specs somehow.

Now on Windows you would probably try something like SiSoftware Sandra, but it seems to recognize only the drivers that are installed in your system. Not the hardware itself. That is almost completely useless. Well I am not aware of any better means to accomplish this task in Windows than to reboot into Linux (whether its a live cd or installed dual boot system, doesn’t really matter) and explore your system with some of the following commands:

• lspci
• cat /proc/cpuinfo
• lsusb
• cat /proc/scsi/scsi
• ls /dev (if using udev)
• dmesg|less

Nagu otsustatud, nii sai ka tehtud - hankisin selle ebardliku pealkirjaga “härrasmeeste ajakirja”.

Huvitav, kas “härrasmeeste” ajakirjaks teeb paberiköite see, kui seal pole ühtki naise ihu paljastavat pilti? Seega on see nö “ohutu” - ka kõige armukadedam naine ei pahanda selle peale, sest “Märdi mure” nimelise elumehe-jutuni ta niikuinii selle reklaamtekstipuntra seltsis vastu ei pea. Teen siis Lommiga tutvust ning jagan siin mõningaid tähelepanekuid.

Suuremal osal artiklitel puudub autori nimi ja mõnel puhul on see täesti aru saadav miks. Tekst on nii hüplik ja ebaprofessionaalne, et ka mina ei sooviks oma nime seal all/juures näha. Juuresolevatel illustratsioonidel ja fotodel puudub viide allikale ja/või autorile, samuti pole seal juures mitte mingit seletavat kommentaari. Iga artikkel on eri kirjastiiliga ning eri kirjasuurusega - küljendaja kannatab skisofreenia all.

Ajakirja tervikuna vaadates torgib silma ühtlaselt ja külmalt läbiv iseloomujoon - paberiraiskamise tipp on täis reklaamartikleid ja nendega kaasa käivaid tavareklaame, millele on “kavalalt” mõni leht teisi jutte ja veel reklaame vahele jäetud.

Cadillaci ajaloo artikkel on lausa topelt tähelepanuväärne. Seal muutub kirjastiil lausa keset artiklit ning juuresolevad pildid on artikli sisuga seotud vaid niipalju, et kujutavad tõenäoliselt Cadillace. Ei mingit seletavat teksti mudelitüüpidest, kuid keda see nii väga huvitabki. Artikkel on pealiskaudne ja mõeldud lihtsalt toetama Cadillaci reklaami ajakirja sisekaanel.

Keset “Round Table” artiklit tuuakse sisse mingi võõrkeelne termin “charter”, mida ohtralt pruugitakse, kuid kordagi lahti ei selgitata. Üldse on kogu artikkel kuidagi sihitu ja rutakalt kokku klopsitud. Võib aru saada, et mingit salapärased ümarlauad koondavad mingeid inimesi. Midagi vabamüürlaste, Rotary klubide või veel salajasemate ühingute laadne moodustis?

Keelekasutus pole ka just korrektne kirjakeel. Näiteks artiklist “Katkenud missioon”: “Samuti oli nn sõdurikodud, kus oli võimalik mängida tasuta piljardit, osta erinevat staffi, vaadata telekat, mängida arvutimänge jms, mis oli tol hetkel Eesti sõjaväe jaoks ulme.”
Artikkel paistab silma selle poolest, et siin on ainsana piltidel ka selgitavad tekstid juures ning märge “Foto: erakogu”. Ülejäänud pildid on vist suvalistest kohtadest üle netiavaruste kokku pasteeritud.
Ühe pildi all on kirjas “Lahinglaskmine Carl Gustafist”, kuid pildil pole mingit lasku kujutatud. Lihtsalt sõjard pikutamas, Kusti õlal.

Lommi lõpus on mõni lehekülg “posimist”, mida kroonib jutt negatiivsetest ja positiivsetest energiapäevadest ning “väike vihje”: “uuringute tulemusel on kindlaks tehtud, et peavaluravimid ja metallpurgist õlle joomine alandavad potentsi!” Artikli autoriks on märgitud Inga Lastikka, diplomeeritud rahvusvaheline bioenergoterapeut. Huvitav, millised uuringud ja mis asutus selle diplomi välja on andnud?

Veidraid lausehakatisi:
“Juba aegade algusest on inimest võlunud kaks asja - kosmos ja meri.” Jah? Mida muud polegi? Milline loll lause.
“Idee on välja töötatud ERKI lõpetanud stilisti poolt ning see kannab endas sügavamaid mõtteid ja tundeid.” Jah, mida on ühelgi teisel pulmi korraldaval ettevõttel välja pakkuda selle vastu, kui üks on juba ERKI lõpetanud! Ka need “sügavamad tunded ja mõtted” sisendavad kindlasti julgust selle firma poole pöörduda.

Reklaamidest nõretav, ebaprofessionaalne, sisutühi ja üle põlve kokku klopsitud tapetud puude raiskamine. Pealiskaudsus on häiriv ja mingit pealöögisuunda pole. On enam kui selge, et sellesse pastakast välja imetud värdsõnalise pealkirjaga ajakirja mina enam oma finantse ei investeeri. Juu ma pole siis piisavalt härrasmees.

Many thanks go to Andrew Z from OOOninja for directing my attention to OOo Tabs extension. It’s something similar to what I thought, but not quite.

• You cannot navigate through tabs with the usual ctrl+tab/ctrl+shift+tab
• you cannot close tabs with ctrl+w
• well also the right click menu on the tabs bar doesn’t give you the option to close a tab - you simply have to go File->Close
• and the tab titles don’t reflect the titles of the documents, simply “my windowN”
• I hope they learn from Firefox, fix the previously mentioned discomforts, also closing “X” would be nice
• and in the future I hope they also get to implementing Firefox’s FishEyeTabs, as I cannot live without it anymore :P.

Seems like Canada has the first reasonable big TV network, at least in North America, that is beginning to offer TV shows via BitTorrent. DRM free, simple torrents! “The show will be completely free (and legal) for you to download, share & burn to your heart’s desire.” Funny I don’t see Creative Common Licence attached anywhere near. I guess that would have been too much to ask. One step at a time.

The show’s “Canada’s Next Great Prime Minister“. Downloads via MiniNova.org. The show has it’s own channel on Youtube. For example watch the last year’s finale. But some videos are not available outside the Canada. Like this.

Now of course, if you’re not canadian, as me, then you’d go “Canada’s Next whadda wha?”, but is seems the show within Canadian borders is a hit, with as many viewers tuning in as an episode of House. (.oO how badass would it be to get legal episodes of House like that .. I love House MD.)

Info via various sources, among them Michael Geist, an Ottawa-based advocate of open sharing over the internet. There seems to be somekind of problem with Canadian ISP’s who are restricting torrent traffic in their networks, so basically the irony might very well be true.

“It would be ironic if ISP network management practices ensured that viewers outside the country enjoyed better access to the program than the Canadian taxpayers who helped fund its creation,” Michael Geist wrote in his blog.
